Hash 1484 – KINGSBRIDGE

Hmm… Been dodging the hash for the last few weeks, suspecting that I would get ‘volunteered’ for the Words (Ed. selfless of the assembled to deliver on that suspicion for you). Thing is, what excuse to give? Previous weeks included bad weather, too far to go, same locations etc. None seemed to apply this week: lovely weather, not been there for a while, and virtually on my doorstep. Decided to go; strategy of laying low and hiding has worked before, why not again?

Well, it appears that all things catch up with you eventually, and I was espied by the tall lady who is Rizzo. No escape, despite my protests that I wasn’t really there (or all there). I could have been a hologram! Still, I thought, it won’t be too bad – and I will always have the RA’s notes (more on that disaster later).

Anyway, back to the Circle Up: A very good turnout, including some that I hadn’t seen for a long while, most noticeably Good Head and Debriefed. Welcome back, you two – or was that your bi-annual visit? Two back, two gone: Going Down and Piddler have now left these shores for sunnier climes in Spain, and we wish them every success and happiness in their golden years.

It transpired that there were many Hares, chief(s) among them being Nice Buns, Rizzo and Pimples. They were aided and abetted by Muckspreader and many progeny, their names escaping my ageing memory! There were a lot of children (school holidays) and a good assortment of dogs, too, with GHR and Come Tonight bringing their lovely Goldie, and even a spare! Didn’t see Ging Gang and Goolie, but they arrived late as usual – apparently got lost on the way, but still found their way to the pub afterwards. Rubbery took some hash pics of the motley assembly, and we were off.

Morticia and I are walking wounded at the moment, and set off at a comfortable pace, along with Cowpat and Nokkers – much to the disapproval of Zoë. We must have been slow because, ahead of us, I could see Dulux, Filth, Nutcracker, Know Nuts and Twisted Sister. Only Lazy Git and Squashed Balls were behind us, but that’s nothing new.

Up through the houses we went, across the old railway bridge and into the countryside. This is where it went wrong for Muckspreader. He got lost, apparently, despite being one of the Hares! Up to the main road, where we found Nice Buns and Rizzo retraining as Lollipop Ladies, seeing the old folk safely across the road. Being at the back, and also walking the Short, I didn’t see any of the ‘Longs’, but without an appearance by Re-Entry it left the way clear for Overshot to make a bid for victory. Stiff competition though, with Blown Off, Undercovers, Over Exposed and Bit O’ Ruff in the mix. (No, you don’t count Wet Spot!) Shaggy, Winnie-the-Pooh and Flage do, but they are Ladies (Ed. Scribe’s capitalisation – just saying…) who don’t partake in common competition (Ed. such flattery! Or else [endearing] delusion… 😘) .

Back in Kingsbridge, there was an upmarket beer stop by the Fire Station. A bevy of young beauties (also Hares, I believe) welcomed us and lured us in with exotic drinks. It was a shame to leave, but needs must, and we got back to base.

There at the On Down, I learnt – to my horror – that the RA was Olive. Bugger, I thought: there goes my early night! And so it proved. To be honest, she lost me for a while in her pre-hash ramblings. National days for this and that, or something. I found myself looking around at some bemused and glassy-eyed faces: Lactaster, Dirty Nights and She’s Ready to name a few. Even WGAS was quiet. (Ed. if only there was some other [maybe speedier…?] way of harnessing this super-power…) Dragging myself back to reality, I found Olive had moved on to actually mentioning the Hash. Roars of approval all round!

Nice Tackle was mentioned, although I can’t recall why. So was the Italian Stallion (several times!), so perhaps she just likes the names (Ed. yes, I mean I can’t imagine any other explanation…😆) . Apparently, Spotty Botty was seen rearranging her bra and contents in the car park, but I’m inclined to think that this was a hasher’s fantasy, as she had Flatface with her, and would (surely) act unusually demurely (?). Can’t Come had no belt and couldn’t keep his trousers up, but this could have been another of Olive’s fantasies.

Overshot had booked an appointment in Kingsbridge in the afternoon, specifically designed so that he could recce the trail and get a head start. This news was greeted with universal cries of ‘Shame’ (Ed. entirely appropriately). We proceeded to sing a rapturous rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ to Barbarella. No virgins or T-shirts this week, and it was on to the Down Downs.

There appeared to be many, many drinks (Ed. a fair number were half-pints of water, though, so I’m pretty sure Pre- and Post-Christmas budgets are safe… 😅), so when Olive decided to give none to the Hares I got confused and tried to remember who got them. I got Olive’s notes afterwards, but they may as well have been in hieroglyphics: they come a close second to Squashed Balls’ apple or banana!

I think Down Downs went to :

Some Hares? (Pimples, Nice Buns, Rizzo and assorted offspring)
Ging Gang – something about Sheila’s Island (who knows!)
Filth – drinking too much red wine (is there such a thing?) (Ed. No)
Marty – for running with her dog, Mabel (who is quicker than many hashers!)
Barbarella – for her Birthday
Overshot – for not being an Italian Stallion (Ed. no mention of clandestine pre-hash trail-recce-ing, then?)
Shaggy – (for not being an FBI, actually [‘First Bitch In’ – questionable hash-related provenance…]. Or some other reason.)
Italian Stallion – for being Olive’s principal fantasy (He’s been renamed HobNob)
Wet Spot – for being Wet Spot (Ed. Awww!)

At last, it was finished. Thanks to the Hares for a great hash. The pub was thanked and, for those who hadn’t jumped into the estuary to escape, it was ON ON to sunny (or not) Cornwood.

P.S. Most of you reading this will find it hard to believe but, 25 years ago, Morticia and I wrote the words every week, printed 50 copies and handed them out at the next Hash. Times change eh? (Ed. Cripes. Although it almost sounds as though you miss the role… Almost as though you might be volunteering to be re-appointed to the position of Permanent SH4 Scribe…? Say no more, G: I’ll draft the petition…)
