Hash 1485 – CORNWOOD

Great to be back in the South Hams pack after spending time relaxing on holiday – well, I did manage a Hash with Malvern Hash: what a lovely bunch, even though the hare took us to the top of the Malvern hills and down again. Its always been an enjoyable experience seeing how other hashes do it – it’s worth finding a hash when on your travels.

Wednesday’s weather had been miserable all day and was just starting to brighten up prior to travelling to Cornwood, when a message was sent by Winnie the Pooh about traffic problems on the Southbound A38 at Ivybridge…New compass required, Winnie! 😆

On arrival at the Cornwood Inn car park, I was immediately pounced on by Olive: “Can you do the RA-ing?”, she asked, before I could say ‘How lovely it is see you’. Shock. “I don’t know…Why?” I asked; “We have been let down at the last minute,” she said. So I agreed, on the basis that I had been head-hunted, and how could I let you lovely hashers suffer any other RA, particularly Olive, who was holding five sheets of closely-typed A4 at the time.

As we circled up, a large, black off-road SUV, driven by our GM sped into the car park and claimed half a dozen spaces. We gazed in amazement as she vacated the vehicle with a shrug and exclamation, “What?!”.
Flower Power (ISCAH3) ,Tom his mate and Jenny, Bo Peep’s mate were welcomed into the fold, and I was pressured, as we all are, to write this c##p.

A full briefing followed by the Hare, Re-entry, advising us torches required and on how long and dangerous the Long was 7miles; he would be guiding on route, but not waiting for slower runners, who should do the Short, which was boring and 3.5 miles, and if you’re doing the Walkers, good luck because I don’t care: 2miles, all checks, one and on, marked within 80 metres [Ed. I heard 50 metres, just to give the pot a little stir…] of check – more about that later.

So off we trotted, Shorts towards Wotter and Longs and Walkers towards Harford. Longs at mach-1, as ever, across fields and overgrown, flooded footpaths with those irritating, hanging brambles.

As I was with the slower Longs, Re-entry gave me instructions – something about a wall. I replied, “Yes, I’ve already reached it”, I was hanging… The right way, off checks, saw the Longs into Dendles Waste, woods crossing streams in steep-sided gorges: Lactaster decided to jump into the depths of a stream, rather than risk the possibility of slipping in. Hob Knob, being the Italian/Roman that he is, used the bridge with an X marked: I guess he thought it was ’10’, not ‘Don’t cross’.

After the second river crossing, there were mutterings from Dirty Nights and Rizzo, of “I don’t like this,” as
we scaled a 10-metere moss-covered cliff (slight exaggeration). Once again, Shaggy was taken out by a sniper leaving a nasty gash (on her knee [turned out just to be a mud-caked scar, from a previous, slightly more serious injury]), fortunately not as bad as Wout Van Art descending on the Vuelta (Tour of Spain: proper sport).

Once we had left the moors of New Waste, we hit the lanes and footpaths to which FRB’s were led at least half a mile uphill off a check by Muck Spreader. Towards the end, when we were heading away from Cornwood, a
check had us confused as no dust was to be seen within 80 metres of it, much to Re-Entry’s amusement, who pointed us in the right direction to see a spot of dust at least 20 metres further on.

Meanwhile, on the Short, latecomers – those that live the closest, in Plympton – were She’s Ready (we
spent an hour looking for her the next day on Tits as she turned up late), Genital Heat Rash and Come Tonight. Bo Peep had abandoned her mate, Jenny, which was unfortunate as confusion ensued when Marty thought what was obviously an L was an S, leading her co-hasherriets Windy Puff and 1st-timer, Jenny, onto the treacherous 7-miler. Fortunately, the hare short-cutted them to the finish. On the actual Short, Gary Glitter warned those behind “Heads!” then smashed her nose onto a rather large branch; those behind just stepped over it, minding their shins. Who would have thought, the race was on, and a sprint finish ensued with 1st-timer, Tom, taking the honours.

On the Walkers, enthusiasm was waning due to fighting their way up an overgrown, flooded path with minimal marks. Rubbery made the command decision, ‘Sack it and get back to the On Down’.

Back at the pub, Lowt’arse decided to return the honours of searching, and went out searching for overdue Walkers.

Hob Knob, soon to be a father, and Spunky McSpunk Face, soon to be a Grandfather, left after the run due to the mother-to-be at home having contractions with the baby’s head showing when they left for the hash [Ed. murmurs of ‘priorties?’ from (only) some of the assembled!].

Down downs were awarded to:

Re-Entry – hare
Jenny – Virgin
Bo Peep – abandoning Virgin to the Short-Longs
Tom – Virgin and winner of the Shorts
Spunky McSpunkface – nominated by Gary Glitter for her violent nose-to-tree experience
Lactaster – enthusiasm for jumping in streams unnecessarily

10:20-ish, still no sign of Olive, Barbarella and Ching Chong. They did arrive a little later.

The Long was a cracking trail, if a little long, but it was almost the exact opposite of half of an A2B hash I laid last year. Great minds!

Yeuck and Myself have really enjoyed the fun we have had with hashers on and off the trail – thanks for being such a great bunch of people at SH4. Please keep it like that.
