Following the very sad news of Morticia’s passing last week, the family have shared that the funeral will be held at midday on Wednesday 8 January at South Milton Church, with the burial to take place at the South Milton burial ground opposite. Hashers are invited to join the gathering at South Milton Village Hall afterwards.

HASH 1501 – ERMINGTON

“Oh, Little town of Ermington,
How still we see thee lie…”

That’s until SH4 arrived.

“Above thy deep and dreamless sleep…”

No chance of that with Doggy Style’s address to the assembled hash. (Ed. Although I think we were spared the P.E. teacher’s whistle. We must have been unusually well-behaved…!)

Sad words to start the evening: the loss of the lovely Morticia, with the wish that she had joined Fallen Woman and Rambo and was starting an upstairs hash SH5 (Ed. a comforting thought 🧡)

“…The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth…”

…with the torches of 30 or so hashers…

“…The everlasting light!
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.”

Py stepped forward to give us the gen on the evening’s trail, informing us there was a biscuit stop, which wasn’t a stop as we were required to pause only briefly to collect said biscuit from Hekkel to avoid causing a tail back! (Ed. and what a superlative little shortbread it was. Not content with being architect of the Unbeatable Christmas Cake, Hekkel has also now scooped the crown for delicate, buttery, little biscuits!)

We set off and the trail immediately split, with the Shorts going left along the lane then into the field & up, up, up… The Longs headed down through the town, and that’s where my knowledge of the long trail ends. Now, normally I have Gaffer’s Garmin download to follow the route taken by the Longs, but this evening Gaffer was still suffering from man ‘flu – or man-up ‘flu, as I like to call it – and was home with a Lemsip in front of a roaring fire (Ed. poor lamb…).

The Short trail continued up then out onto the road and back down to Jyde/Hekkel’s house, through their garden, collecting a biscuit each as we passed (sooo tasty).
Vindaloo put her biscuit in her pocket to enjoy later, only to be told by Jyde that it would be just crumbs at trail’s end, so she fished it out and ate it (Ed. yes, although highly delicious, not structurally robust enough to withstand a runner’s – or, indeed, any – pocket. Part of its charm!).

We then dropped down through their garden onto Pinky’s land. Here we were instructed by this very bossy co-hare to stick to the path and be careful not to tread on the wildflowers. The Longs had caught up with us by this stage, and we tried our hardest to stay on trail, but some unfortunately went off-piste resulting in a right ear-bending from Pinky (Ed. perhaps he missed out on his biscuit…)

After a tour of the field, we climbed up onto the patio and headed west along the lane, then down a very uneven Back Lane. Rob stood guard as we emerged onto the busy A3121, directing us safely across and into the field to follow the Erme out to the A379, then back into Ermington.

The Shorts recorded 4 miles, the Longs…? (Ed. more… [About 6?])

The Crooked Spire was welcoming, as usual. Several hashers had a bite to eat. It was noted that Twisted Sister & Doggy Style used their Christian names for their food orders (tut tut).

Nice Buns was our RA this evening, and performed her duties with the utmost care and diligence. Concern was given for Blown Off’s injury – a viper attack, we were told

Triple Top was acting as a trip hazard; some thought he has collapsed, but it was part of his stretching routine.

Down downs went to :-

Hekkel – Mary Berry of SH4
Lazy Git – 80th Birthday.
Filth – Thanks for organising pre-Xmas do
Pony – Weight loss supremo

Owing to a Facebook-outage at the 11th-hour, I wasn’t able to post a photo from last week to accompany Winnie’s Words, but the 1500 Olympic-themed/Night of the Living Dead Hash was too special to go without at least one little snippet of footage. Enjoy:
