The Words according to SPOTTY BOTTY

HASH 1520 – AVETON GIFFORD
We arrived at Aveton Gifford on a beautiful evening, bathed in sunshine by the river Avon. This is about as poetic as I get.
[Ed. we were transported, Spotty – don’t stop now! 😘And now, on to the very brief words: thank you to Can’t Come for being a very concise RA.

We set off on the promise of a Long, Medium, Short, Walk, sweet stops and beer stops [Ed. not sure if multiple sweetie/beer stops were promised, but we all know facts have no place in the Words, gosh darn it! 😘]. Already sounding like the best hash ever… Marty and I had a fantastic catch up on the way round, however managed to miss the sweet stop and the beer stop due to ignoring crosses.

Can’t Come began his RA by thanking the pub as well as Shaggy and Rusty for a well laid hash with lovely beer stops. The sunset made the evening OK [Ed. Don’t overdo it, now… 🙄 (and after we particularly arranged for a magnificent sundown at the appointed hour…tough crowd!)], and there was an abundance of wildlife. We then found out some new information, i.e. that it was Chinese Almond Cookie Day, National Name Yourself Day and National Unicorn Day. Can’t Come proceeded to tell us that he’d named himself ‘Fudge You’ (but far ruder…) in a Teams meeting; I have to say, I am shocked [Ed. you and me, both, Spotty; it’s always the quiet one-…oh, wait.].

Re-Entry was evidently the first at the beer stop [Ed. only true if you count the Longs’ second crack at the BS…] However, he shouted ‘on on’ and then led others down the wrong route, all of whom had to walk back with their heads held low in sheer embarrassment [Ed. such a shame that so many of the Longs were too speedy to spot the over-baked tilled-field diversion (designed to save them from [at least a bit of] the road) – although almost certainly saved them from many more ankle-based injuries…!]  Actually, Re-Entry couldn’t show his face at the pub [Ed. another, arguably more-believable, version of events is that Re-Entry arrived dressed for a mid-August hash, beguiled by the daytime sun…only to find that post-sunset temperatures were very much still typical of early April, and high-tailed it home to warm up).

The first sweet stop was clearly too close, as the Longs got there so quickly that Rusty hadn’t arrived [Ed. too close? Or perfectly judged (to guarantee some ‘leftovers’)…?].

Congratulations to Jyde for finally kicking out his first check [Ed. you can’t rush these things…]. In fact, it turned out to be a night of firsts [Ed. for Mountie…I feel as though the Hash may have done a sprained ankle or two before?], as Mountie turned her ankle and had to be helped back with her daughter, Bo Peep.

Wet Spot, unsurprisingly, had a bit of moaning to do [Ed. well, he does have some serious catching up to do]: he had to arrive on his own, totally abandoned by Dimwit and Lazy Git… Never mind, Wet Spot [Ed. honestly, break a few ribs and you’re instantly bumped out of the car pool – brutal].

In the pub we sang a melodic Happy Birthday to Gomez, who celebrated his birthday last Saturday, and the down downs were awarded to:

  • Shaggy and Rusty – hares
  • Pony Shafter, for meeting his weight target and looking fabulous
  • Gomez, for his birthday
  • Mountie for injuring her ankle – however, she had left, therefore Wet Spot took her place (or did he, due to driving? [Ed. He did. Hero.])
  • a virgin who brought his own Guinness up [Ed. there were a few raised eyebrows but, to his credit, he drained the glass…and he wasn’t the last to finish]
  • Can’t Come and Marty then stitched up Spotty, as she had been missing for a while – so I took one for the team [Ed. A true martyr to the cause].

On on to Plympton, somewhere
[Ed. Cadover Bridge], and a reminder that there are some very special birthdays coming up…
