The Words according to BADCOCK

Hash 1477 – SOUTH BRENT:

The Circle Up saw a smaller group than usual this week, with females outnumbering males by a ratio of 4 to 1. I wondered what might explain the low male turnout. Perhaps there was a local Shed Enthusiast convention? Or maybe the Watchdog special on faulty bikinis was airing on TV again? Who knows; it was quite the mystery.
I had been in a complete dilemma all day: watch the footy round the neighbours’ house, as arranged? Or show my support to the local hash, lovingly prepared by Willy Waiver? Football or Hash? Football or Hash? Football or Hash… After many hours of pondering, self-reflection and agonising soul-searching, I came to the obvious, most-logical conclusion: I could do the Short, get back to The Packhorse in time for kick-off and drink my own body weight in ale. Decision made!!
At the Circle Up, Willy Waiver asked if I minded sweeping the Longs. And then – to add insult to injury – I was nominated to do The Words. Bugger! With the Lost Causes doing the Longs, I’d be lucky to get back before the final whistle of Extra Time!!! I thought of the irony of doing a runner from the hash, but decided against it.
Willy Waiver had prepared a fine trail, with the Longs and the Shorts all ascending the steep slopes to the top of Brent Hill, where a splendid 4G signal meant I could listen to the football commentary on my phone. [Ed. phew] After half an hour, England were 1 – 0 down, so I decided to move on, catch up with the Lost Causes, and do my duty as Sweep, feeling a bit like a sheepdog herding a particularly unruly flock. The deep river-crossing proved daunting for Vindaloo and Barbarella, who turned back and opted for the Short trail instead.
Back in the pub the football rabble completely drowned out Squashed Balls efforts to RA: no-one could hear the poor fella over the chants of “It’s coming Home, its coming home; football’s coming home…” As if. The noise of the pub, and Squashed Balls illegible notes randomly scripted on an old palm leaf, meant I’ve been struggling to find any snippets of hash misdemeanors, social blunders or impropriety to pad out the Words.
The Down Downs possibly went to:
Willy Waiver for an excellent Hash
Muck Spreader? [for Hash Heroism: gallantly ensuring hashers made it across the raging torrent safely]
Winnie the Pooh? [commitment to Hashing: all-day drinking, but still valiantly making it to the hash, and continuing…)
Harry Kane – Penalty
Olly Watkins – Late Winner

Pickpocket – [more Hash Heroism: generously lending a warm layer of her own to some other shivering hasher (possibly post-river traverse?}]

Gaffer – [general grumbling (a slow news day, evidently…)]

Gary Glitter – [I forget why…but doubtless a very worthy reason. And always humbling to witness a master beer-chugger practise their craft 😘]
On On to Berlin for the Final [Ed. Tumbleweed…(too soon?)].
Or possibly The Odd Wheel at WEMBURY.
